What to expect

During this course you’ll learn 6 fundamental clinical reasoning concepts. Understanding these concepts will help make your clinical reasoning process more efficient and effective. Clinicians today have available to them a huge volume of information and much of it seems contradictory. For example the recommendations for the treatment of pain vary widely from simple reassurance and relaxation to specific and targeted treatments. Which of these approaches is evidenced based? As I hope you’ll learn in this course, both approaches are appropriate and evidence based for a specific patient. In this case, understanding pain mechanism classification makes it simple to determine which approach is most likely to help. This might sound complicated but it’s actually simple once you know what to do. Understanding these concepts helps clinicians to see how different approaches can help different patients and how new research on pain and manual therapy fit into the puzzle of clinical practice.

This course is well referenced. I have included many direct quotes from research papers so you get information directly from the published papers. My interpretation is also in there, bias included. Since I think bias is an important topic we start with a short section on that. Click here to read a full list of references.

I have spent many years thinking about these concepts and how they can inform clinical practice. I believe that the hallmark of a skilled clinician is thinking carefully about what could most help each unique patient. My hope is that this course can help you in that way.

Assessment

The focus of this course is to help you to think about these concepts, not to test your knowledge recall. At the end of each section there is a short reflective exercise to help consolidate your knowledge into take home messages and homework, you can do this in any way you prefer. Each section is followed by a short quiz.
